What is WebScroll?
Webscroll is a software and database solution designed to handle information from multiple domains. In it's extreme version it is a directory search engine

Why use a directory and what is a metasite?
There are several advantages to using a directory type of organization, especially if the person searching for information is unfamiliar with the topic. If you can find where in the structure you have ended up, you can browse both back and forward through the levels. The categories in which a term appears gives one contextual information. This type of information is not formatted or displayed in a cascade algorithm by any current search engine, such as Google, Yahoo, etc. A metasite is a web site, which provides information on other sites. I the case of WHI, all information provided originates from other sites. WHI itself does not provide medical advice.

What does WebScroll look like?
We offer several examples on this website, or alternatively you can visit www.worldhealthinformation.org.

How does WebScroll work?
By selecting a topic in the first column, data is retrieved and presented in the second column. This can be repeated several times until the desired information and corresponding URL is found. Selecting the URL takes the user to the information

Does the user go directly to the required URL or via a results page?
Both options are possible, with one of the options selected by you. The results page option gives you an extra opportunity to provide additional information or targeted advertisement.

How many links can a WebScroll web site provide?
Depending on the custom-built database WebScroll can provide an infinite number of links.

Is WebScroll compatible with all browsers and operating systems?
Yes. As WebScroll is offered in DHTML and browser based most operating systems and recent browsers will be compatible, including IE, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, Firefox, Konqueror and Safari on Windows, Mac OS and Linux

Is WebScroll Section 508/W3C compliant?
Partially. SiteScroll is a complex utility that improves accessibility to data, however it requires the use of stylesheets (CSS), standard browser JavaScript and a dynamic database engine to achieve this level of access to thousands of text links. SiteScroll can therefore not meet some of the Priority 1 and 2 checklist items that relate to Dynamic content, 'turned off' CSS and JavaScript. SiteScroll does however provide quick and easy access to a high-contrast version of the application to assist users with impaired visibility.

Does WebScroll require additional plug-ins?
No.

Access is limited by password protection
